Dogmatismo, alienação e miséria cultural uma reflexão sobre o julgamento do macaco Scopes / Dogmatism, alienation and cultural misery - thinking about the Scopes monkey trial

Resumo

Esse artigo analisa o filme O vento será tua Herança (Inherit the Wind) à luz da alienação religiosa que acomete todas as sociedades humanas desde os primórdios até os dias atuais. O filme trata do julgamento do professor John Thomas Scopes na cidade de Dayton, no estado americano do Tennessee no ano de 1925, conhecido pelo epíteto ridicularizador de “O julgamento do macaco”. O filme de Stanley Kramer – produção americana de 1960 – conta a história do professor Scopes, que foi levado a julgamento porque ensinou em suas aulas as idéias evolucionistas de Charles Darwin, proscritas naquele Estado por irem contra a teoria criacionista bíblica. O caso atraiu enorme atenção internacional porque o que estava em jogo era basilar para a estrutura social ocidental, o homem via-se ameaçado de ter desacreditado uma explicação que não admitia confronto por mais de um milênio, ele mais uma vez se via perante a iminência do triunfo de uma blasfêmia, como vinha acontecendo desde o Renascimento. O artigo relaciona outros filmes e literaturas a fim de demonstrar que a religião é uma muleta que o homem criou para si mesmo e que acabou se tornando parte de seu corpo. O homem simplesmente não consegue perceber que suas pernas já estão curadas e continua a se apoiar na muleta como se fosse um aleijado.

ABSTRACT: This article analyzes the film Inherit the Wind through the religious alienation that affects all human societies since the beginning until today. The film deals with the trial of a teacher, John Thomas Scopes, in the city of Dayton, the U.S. state of Tennessee in 1925, known by the scoffer epithet of " The Monkey Trial". The film by Stanley Kramer – an American production of the 1960’s - tells the story of Scopes, who was brought to trial because he taught the evolutionary ideas of Charles Darwin his classes in, outlawed in that state by going against the biblical creationist theory. The case attracted enormous international attention because what was at stake was fundamental to the Western social structure and the man saw himself threatened to have discredited an explanation that did not allow confrontation for more than a millennium, he once again saw the face of imminent the triumph of blasphemy, as had been happening since the Renaissance. The article lists other films and literature to show that religion is a crutch that man has created for himself and which became part of his body. The man just can’t see that his legs are healed and continues to rely on crutches like a cripple.
